Conservation Commission to pursue North Pond habitat restoration plan

SOUTHWICK — Conservation Commission discusses North Pond habitat restoration. The Southwick Conservation Commission held a work session on April 26 to discuss plans for the North Pond Conservation Area with Benjamin Mazzei of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. The state-led initiative would remove trees and conduct controlled burns to restore habitat for the Grasshopper Sparrow, a bird nearing extinction.
Commissioner Mehmet Mizanoglu expressed concern about the tree removal quantity and emphasized public education needs. The Commission and Mazzei agreed to schedule a site visit and public informational walk. Additionally, Boy Scout Andrey Belyshev presented a complementary project to mark trails and remove debris, which the Commission will support.
