Southwick Board of Health Condemns Granville Road Home Occupied Without Certificate of Occupancy

SOUTHWICK — May 18, 2026 — Southwick Board of Health votes to condemn occupied but unfinished home at 85 Granville Road. The board voted 2-0 at its May 18 public hearing to issue a condemnation order barring homeowner Mina Gupta and her six-year-old son from residing at the property, which Health Director Kayleen Simons said had 22 violations — 20 classified as endangering health and human safety — when she and the building inspector inspected on April 30. Simons found no functioning toilet, sink, shower, or tub; no smoke detectors; and an open electrical panel with exposed wiring. The case came to the board after Woodland school's principal alerted the building inspector that a student had reported sleeping in the home's basement. Gupta, who addressed the board directly, said her original contractor took her money over four years, had his license canceled, and removed building materials from the site; she said a subsequent accident left her unable to complete construction for three months. Final electrical inspection passed May 13; a final plumbing inspection — the last required step before a joint fire, building, and health re-inspection can occur — was attempted May 18 but not completed because Gupta's plumber was unavailable.
