Southwick Conservation Commission approves negative determinations for carport and dock projects

SOUTHWICK — April 6, 2026 — Southwick Conservation Commission unanimously approved negative determinations for two residential projects and authorized several open-space maintenance expenditures at its April 6 meeting. The board cleared a carport addition at 10 Iroquois Drive for applicant Mike McElhaney, whose proposed structure would cover an existing paved driveway approximately 47 feet from a wetland, and approved a 50-foot aluminum dock at 116 Congermont Road for new owner Mike Leander — an increase from the originally submitted 34-foot length driven by emergent vegetation growth along the shoreline. The commission also voted unanimously to release a $10,000 bond and issue a certificate of compliance for 1 Hudson Drive, authorized up to $400 for a commercial weed trimmer from its $2,000 land maintenance account, and approved birdhouse and picnic table improvements at Sofonowski Preserve based on a November 2025 wildlife assessment by commission member Martha Kane. Separately, the commission learned it must cut its budget by 10 percent on top of a prior 5 percent reduction, effectively eliminating tree-removal funding, and was informed by letter that the Hampden County Sheriff's Department is ceasing routine marine patrol and dive-team coverage of Congamond Lake due to a $26.5 million budget cut.
