Other Committee · Meeting of August 25, 2026
Southwick's Open Space and Recreation Plan Committee voted 6-0 to approve prior minutes, then spent most of its August 25 meeting rewriting a draft resident survey with Pioneer Valley Planning Commission planner Derek Strahan. Members added e-bike and splash-pad options, struck a private fishing club with a closed membership from the site list, and voted by consensus to drop a land-protection-strategy question and the term "climate resilience," calling it a potential "trigger word" for conservative residents. One member warned the committee "might end up in the wrong spot" if duplicate online submissions skew results; others countered that requiring names would suppress responses.
The group flagged Southwick's inactive parks and recreation department as a data gap and agreed to seek Select Board help. The survey is expected to go live in September or October, with a public visioning session tentatively set for November.
