Open Space Panel Votes to Submit Master Plan Memo

Other Committee · Meeting of September 29, 2026

Southwick open space panel tells Woodland Ridge residents the town can't fund their overgrown meadow. Resident Cheryl Rocco asked the Open Space Land Management and Planning Committee to arrange mowing and poison-ivy removal in her subdivision's common land, overrun with sumac, tree of heaven and bittersweet. Committee member Connor Fleury said the panel's budget "piggybacks off conservation," whose funding was cut 10 percent this year, and relayed a town suggestion that homeowners form an informal association to pay for the work themselves.

Separately, the committee reviewed a Sofonowski Wildlife Preserve site report estimating roughly $15,000 to repair a 150-foot access road, and voted unanimously, 4-0, to submit a memo to the Master Plan Implementation Committee flagging a duplicate action item and seeking clarity on a proposed wildlife corridor ahead of an October 30 deadline.
