Open Space Panel Votes to Defer Corridor Project
Other Committee · Meeting of September 8, 2026
Southwick's Open Space Land Management and Planning Committee voted 4-0 to postpone four master-plan assignments, including a regional wildlife-corridor project, citing overlap with the Agricultural Commission and thin volunteer capacity. Member Jen DiPietro noted the Agricultural Commission already runs workshops with Land For Good and American Farmland Trust "at the library," undercutting a duplicate open-space task. Martha Cain's site reports described a 32.14-acre Woodland Ridge parcel overrun with invasive tree-of-heaven and an expanding poison ivy patch the committee can only afford to smother with donated pool tarps, saying "we don't have any money to do herbicide applications." At North Pond Conservation Area, Cain found severe erosion gullies from recreational vehicle use and signage that discloses nothing about the state conservation restriction, calling the scene "very uncomfortable." The committee reached no conclusion on North Pond and took no action beyond gathering more information.
