Park and Rec Backs Bike Trail Link to New Condos
Other Committee · Meeting of September 9, 2026
Southwick Park and Rec backs a no-match bike trail link to new Depot Street condos. Economic Development representative Greg Daly presented a roughly quarter-mile connector, about 1,441 feet, running across Christ Lutheran Church land to link the town's rail trail with College Highway and a 100-unit condominium project breaking ground nearby. Daly said the state's Complete Streets grant, recently raised to a $1 million ceiling with "no match associated with it," plus about $38,000 in technical assistance, could fund the project after the Select Board adopted a Complete Streets policy in May.
He cited a nearby trail counter that recorded roughly 60,000 trips in a year and noted the existing Depot Square development "generates more than 300,000 a year" in town tax revenue. One commission member admitted being "kind of hesitant" given recent pickleball court spending but said the project would not draw on taxpayer money. The commission voiced informal support and will send a letter backing the grant application; the pickleball courts are targeted for substantial completion by late October or mid-November.
