Southwick Lake Management Committee advances algae response plan and federal grant strategy for Congamond Lakes. Committee Chair Norm Cheever reported that the Select Board has endorsed a draft algae response framework that routes reports through a five-member decision group, including the chief administrative officer, board of health agent, and harbormaster, each allowed to designate a representative, with the Lake Management Committee serving in an advisory role only. Cheever said the plan, which also calls for a dedicated town website page for official lake status, is targeted for final approval in March.

Member Eric Muller reported that oxygen levels in Congamond continue to hold at levels favorable for avoiding algae blooms, though 2025 water clarity was slightly below recent years. The committee also learned it may now qualify for federal Section 319 grants after agreeing to develop a watershed-based plan with MassD EP and consultant MTC, and that a state-assisted path for dredging shallow coves may be available. A truck that broke through the ice in Middle Pond near the north fishing pier, sitting in roughly 12 to 18 feet of water, drew concern from members, who noted a daily state fine applies to the owner.
