Cultural Council votes to buy ten porch geese

Cultural Council · Meeting of September 17, 2026

Southwick Cultural Council votes to buy ten porch geese for a 2027 art-show fundraiser. Members approved spending $350 on ten decorative lawn geese, at $35 each, for local artists to paint or dress and raffle off at the Art Show, set for April 24-25, 2027. The council also agreed to seek $800 for four new directional signs in its own fiscal 2027 grant request, due October 15, after deciding its current wooden and banner signs are too small to read from the road.

This year's Local Cultural Council stipend for distribution to town groups rose to $9,000, up from $8,500, with a review-and-vote meeting set for November 19. The council is also producing a staged reading of three one-act plays by local playwright Michael Buster McMahon, running October 9-11 on a donation-only basis, and confirmed it is paying him $1,000. "It's basically a fundraiser, right?" one member said of the goose project.

Members separately corrected the date of a dedication honoring the late Ellen and Jim Miles to Saturday, September 26, at 4 p.m.
